Sadie Gilliom

Sadie Gilliom was born in Shelton, WA. Sadie received their B.A. in 2011 at the University of Puget Sound, majoring in Biology and minoring in World Religion. They have always had a passion for the natural world, particularly in herpetology. Growing up, they spent their summers turtle watching, snorkeling with newts, and studying amphibians on wilderness adventures. They are a Certified Interpretive Guide with the National Association of Interpretation and can interpret the natural world in a way that is engaging to everyone. They have worked with a wide variety of animals at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, given presentations on animals, conservation and environmental science at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, Northwest Trek Wildlife Park and the Thurston Conservation District, studied with the Save the Frogs Academy, and forged a partnership with the YMCA to create a summer camp based around salmon and local watersheds.
After studying, writing and working with the Sustainability in Prisons Project for 3 years, Sadie received their Masters of Environmental Studies degree from The Evergreen State College in 2017. Sadie’s masters thesis was on the impact of the Western Pond Turtle Programs on the work environment of correctional staff. Their goal is to continue along a similar line of work through starting an environmental education based re-entry program in Olympia, WA.
