Derek Thedell

Composting Education Coordinator                                                                              MES Program, The Evergreen State College

Derek grew up in the Olympia area and attended public schools in Tumwater. His family spent any and all free time on the pacific coast and the Puget Sound, exploring Washington’s diverse marine ecosystems. After grade school, Derek moved to Bellingham, WA to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Western Washington University, ultimately deciding on Physics with a focus on Astronomy. It was during this time that he developed a passion for science communication and climate advocacy.

Following his undergrad, Derek worked in a wide range of fields including aerospace manufacturing and Washington State Parks. These jobs ultimately brought him back to Olympia, where he will beginning the Masters of Environmental Studies (MES) program at Evergreen starting in the Fall of 2021. Outside of work, he enjoys exploring beaches, games of all kinds and playing bluegrass and Irish folk music. Derek is excited to be a part of the composting team, and to get the opportunity to work alongside everyone here at SPP.
